Body Lift

Common Problems

Despite healthy diet and exercise, many people find it difficult to achieve a well-toned body with smooth contours. Loose, sagging skin and uneven contours are often difficult if not impossible to improve. This can be particularly true for individuals with poor tissue elasticity due to pregnancy, aging or significant weight loss.

Some Solutions

The body lift can help individuals with loose, sagging skin achieve a firmer, more youthful body contour. This surgical procedure improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue and removes excess sagging skin and fat. The body lift is customized to the individual patient, however it is able to treat the following: loose or sagging skin and fat in the abdominal area and extending into the lower back if necessary; low, flat or unevenly shaped buttocks; sagging of the groin; and sagging skin and excess fat of the inner, outer, posterior or whole thigh. Patients will see improvement in the waist, abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. Cellulite can also be improved during surgery.

How a Body Lift is Done

The body lift essentially combines the techniques of liposuction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), the thigh lift, and/or the buttock lift. The incisions will vary according to the individual patient and the extent of the surgery. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat while excision techniques are used to remove excess, sagging skin. Sutures may be placed deep in the underlying tissues to help form the new contours of the body.

The surgery may take anywhere from three to seven hours to perform. Once completed, dressings or bandages may be applied and drainage tubes may be inserted at the incision sites.

Keeping the Patient Comfortable

For the patient's comfort, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia may be administered for the body lift.

The Immediate After-Effects

Swelling and bruising are normal after surgery. Discomfort or pain may also occur and this can be treated with medication. If surgical drains are inserted after surgery, they may be removed within several days to weeks. A compression garment will need to be worn for several weeks. Patients are often able to return to work within four to six weeks.

The Risks

All surgical procedures have associated risks which must be discussed in detail with your surgeon prior to your body lift. The potential risks associated with the body lift may include unfavorable scarring, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, poor wound healing, blood clots, anesthesia risks and asymmetry.

The Results to Expect

Results are immediately visible after the body lift, though it can take one to two years before the final results are achieved. Proper diet and exercise can help to extend the duration of your results.
