Many individuals are bothered by problem areas on their body which prove resistant to diet and exercise, such as the love handles or saddlebags. These areas of localized fat deposits are often due to heredity rather than a lack of fitness or proper eating.
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a procedure which removes excess fat deposits from areas of the body for a slimmer, smoother contour. This is an ideal procedure for patients who are of normal body weight but are bothered by stubborn areas of fat. By improving these areas, liposuction can help to create a more proportionate appearance overall. Liposuction is commonly performed on the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, waist, upper arms, back, inner knees, chest, cheeks, chin, neck, calves and ankles. There are many newer techniques for liposuction available today including SmartLipo™, a laser-assisted lipolysis system which removes fat with less downtime and fewer side effects compared to traditional methods.
How Liposuction is Done
For liposuction, tiny, inconspicuous incisions are made in the skin. Many techniques first inject a sterile liquid solution into the treatment area to help minimize bleeding and trauma. Next, a narrow tube known as a cannula is inserted through the incisions. The cannula is manipulated to loosen the excess fat which is then suctioned out. Traditional liposuction usually takes one to two hours to complete.
SmartLipo™ is a highly effective, minimally-invasive liposuction technique which uses a high-powered laser to rupture and liquefy the fat cells, thus easing removal. This technique generally involves a quicker, easier recovery compared to traditional liposuction. While many areas of the body can be treated, it is ideal for treating small areas like the face, neck and breasts.
Keeping the Patient Comfortable
Many liposuction techniques are performed with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. SmartLipo™ is usually performed with just local anesthesia.
The Immediate After-Effects
Swelling and bruising are normal after liposuction and these will take several weeks to resolve. You will need to wear a special compression garment or elastic bandages to control the swelling and help the skin to retract to its new shape. Small drains may be inserted at the incision sites for a few days to collect excess fluid or blood. Any discomfort that patients experience can be alleviated with medication. Patients are often able to return to work within one to two weeks.
SmartLipo™ involves a shorter recovery. Swelling, bleeding and bruising are usually less than with other techniques. In addition, many patients see results sooner.
There are inherent risks with any procedure which should be discussed in detail you’re your surgeon prior to your Detroit procedure. These may include uneven contours, rippling or loose skin, infection, blood clots, excess fluid loss or accumulation, unfavorable scarring, and anesthesia risks.
The Results to Expect
As the swelling and fluid retention eventually subside after your procedure, your improved body contour will be apparent. Most patients are very happy with their new slimmer appearance and experience a boost in self confidence as well. The results of liposuction can be long lasting with the continued practices of healthy diet and exercise in Detroit, MI.

I’m considering liposuction and wondering if I’d look alright to go on vacation about one month afterward. Are there any lipo techniques that have an easier or shorter recovery?
Because SmartLipo™ is minimally invasive; it allows patients to see faster results, fewer complications and shorter recovery time. SmartLipo’s patients only need a local anesthetic, so the patient is not completely conscious during the procedure. SmartLipo™ carries much fewer risks than traditional Liposuction and is performed in the comfort and privacy of Masri Clinic’s accredited surgical facility. Often, a patient can go back to work within a few short days, and results continue to become visible for up to 3 months.
Is it easier to maintain your weight after undergoing liposuction?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. For the most part, liposuction has a very high patient satisfaction rate. However, there have been reports of some patients finding it more difficult to maintain their weight following liposuction. These reports have been largely anecdotal, so it is hard to say for certain whether this difficulty can be accounted for by other factors having nothing to do with their surgeries (lifestyle, stress, advancing age, hormonal influences, etc.)
I am male, 56 years old and I have a large belly. I have been trying to lose weight unsuccessfully for over 10 years. Can I get most of this fat removed with liposuction and then have a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck and liposuction performed at the same time are very common.
How does the surgeon know when the right amount of fat has been removed during liposuction?
At the time of the procedure the removed fat is measured by the surgeon.
Can liposuction be performed on the back and how effective is it?
SmartLipo™ Laser Liposuction of the back can improve the way you look both in and out of your clothes. For women, back SmartLipo™ removes fat from above the waist and below the shoulder blades, as well as along the sides of the back. This dramatically reduces the unsightly bra bulges.
For men, SmartLipo™ Laser Liposuction of the back can remove the dense, excess layers of fat along the back, creating a more tapered, sleek torso.
I’ve lost a lot of weight recently but my face looks fat. Can liposuction be used on the face?
Tumescent liposuction is the safest and usually the most effective technique for removing fat from the chin, cheeks and jowls.
I’m a man and would like to get rid of my love handles with liposuction. Are there any differences when performing liposuction on men than on women?
Liposuction is performed on the love handles in the same manner for males and females.
I’m a man and considering liposuction of the breast area. Can liposuction be performed just under the nipples rather than on the whole breast? I don’t like how my nipples protrude.
Yes Liposuction can be done only under the nipple area, however if the protruding nipple is due to excessive glandular tissue then excision of that tissue may have to be included.
I’m interested in reducing the size of my breasts but I am hesitant about the extensive scar. What are the circumstances where liposuction would be sufficient?
This method only works on breasts that have an excess of fat. Younger women often don’t meet the requirements for this type of surgery. Women who have already experienced menopause are the most likely candidates for breast reduction through liposuction. Some younger women who are overweight and have a larger amount of excess fat in their breasts may also be good candidates.
