Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement
Common Problems
Many women are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts. Some women simply feel that their breasts are too small, while others may be looking to restore a loss of volume or shape after pregnancy or weight loss.
Some Solutions
Breast augmentation (breast enhancement, breast enlargement) is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure among women. It can enhance the shape and size of the breasts with the use of implants. Breast augmentation can increase the size of small breasts, balance out breasts which are different in size, restore volume or shape following pregnancy or weight loss, or reconstruct the breasts following mastectomy.
How a Breast Augmentation is Done
There are several different options available in breast augmentation. The first involves the type of implant. Implants are made of a silicone shell which may be filled with either sterile salt water (saline) or silicone gel. There are several possible locations for the incisions, including in the crease beneath the breast (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). Less commonly, the incision may be located through the belly button (transumbilical). The implant is inserted through the incision and may be placed under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or over the pectoral muscle (subglandular).
All of these options will be discussed with your surgeon prior to your procedure. The surgery itself usually takes between one and two hours. When completed, the incisions may be taped and a gauze bandage applied.
Keeping the Patient Comfortable
Local anesthesia and sedation may be given to keep the patient comfortable for the breast augmentation procedure. General anesthesia may be administered instead if the patient desires.
The Immediate After-Effects
There may be bruising and swelling on the breasts, and it may take three to five weeks for the swelling to fade. Bandages or dressings are usually removed within a few days, though patients may need to wear a surgical bra for a period of time afterward. Any discomfort that results can be alleviated with medication. Patients are usually able to return to work within a few days.
The Risks
All surgical procedures carry potential risks which should be discussed in detail with your plastic surgeon. These may include bleeding, infection, poor healing, capsular contracture, and adverse anesthesia reactions.
The Results to Expect
The results of breast augmentation are long lasting. Most women are very happy with their results and experience a boost in self confidence as well.
