Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
|
| Breast feeding is one of the common causes of sagging breasts. A breast lift can help raise and reshape sagging breasts. |
Common Problems
Over time, the appearance of the breasts can change, often losing their youthful shape and firmness. This can be further exacerbated by pregnancy, breastfeeding and fluctuations in weight.
Some Solutions
The breast lift (mastopexy) is a common surgical procedure among women which can raise and reshape sagging breasts. A firmer, shapelier breast contour can be achieved by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipples. For some women, the areola becomes enlarged as well and it may be reduced in size during the breast lift procedure. For women seeking fuller breasts, the breast lift may be combined with breast augmentation with implants.
How a Breast Lift is Done
There are several incision patterns and techniques which may be used for the breast lift depending on the individual patient's condition. The incisions may be located in one of the following positions: (1) around the areola as two concentric circles; (2) around the areola with a vertical line down to the breast crease; and (3) around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and then running horizontally along the breast crease. Through the incision, the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, the nipple and areola are repositioned, enlarged areolas are reduced if necessary, and excess skin is removed.
The surgery takes anywhere from one to three hours to perform. When completed, gauze dressings may be applied to the breasts along with an elastic bandage or surgical bra.
Keeping the Patient Comfortable
General anesthesia is often used for the breast lift to keep the patient comfortable. In some cases, local anesthesia and sedation may be used instead.
The Immediate After-Effects
The breasts will likely be swollen and bruised after surgery. The swelling may take several weeks to fade. Some patients also experience numbness which will fade over the next six weeks. Discomfort can be alleviated with medication. For the first few days after surgery, a bandage or surgical bra will need to be worn and then this will be replaced by a soft support bra which should be worn continuously for the next three to four weeks. Patients are often able to return to work within one or more weeks.
The Risks
There are potential risks associated with all surgical procedures and these should be thoroughly discussed with your plastic surgeon prior to your procedure. Potential risks associated with the breast lift may include bleeding, infection, poor healing, and adverse anesthesia reactions
The Results to Expect
The final results of the breast lift will gradually appear over several months' time as the breasts continue to settle into their new shape and position. The results are long lasting and most women are very happy with their results.
