Post-Chemical Peel Skincare Tips

Dec 05, 2022

Chemical peels offer many benefits for anyone who wishes to have youthful and glowing skin. The procedure lifts your skin to reveal a new skin cell layer and can give you smooth, supple, and evenly toned skin. Additionally, chemical peeling can reduce wrinkles, discoloration, and scarring.

During chemical peels, your cosmetic surgeon uses a chemical solution to peel the damaged outer layers of your skin. As a result, the new skin cells that grow in place of the peeled ones are usually smoother, less wrinkled, and more evenly toned.

However, the quality of your results depends on how well you take care of your skin after the procedure. Here are a few tips to help you get the best results from your chemical peel.

Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure

Your skin will be delicate for the first few days after your chemical peel treatment. Your skin cells are new and vulnerable to damage. One of the worst things you can do is expose your skin to heat and sunlight.

Too much heat and sun exposure can put you at risk of permanent skin scarring, which beats the purpose of getting a chemical peel in the first place. Therefore, try to stay indoors as much as possible. If you must head out, put on sunscreen and cover your skin with a hat or umbrella. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms as well.

Don't Pick or Scratch Your Skin

You may notice your skin peeling a few days after your procedure. As tempting as it may be to pick at the peels, resist the urge. Picking at your skin can cause permanent scarring. You also expose your skin to infections that may cause further damage. Wait until full recovery to exfoliate your skin.

Minimize Skin Care Products

Now is not the time to go overboard with skin care products. Instead, use products that your cosmetic surgeon recommends.

Avoid using makeup, perfumes, and lotions during the first few days after your peel. These products can irritate your skin and cause an infection. After the first few days, only use gentle skin care products that do not contain alcohol or other harsh chemicals. Also, look for products that say "non-comedogenic" or "for sensitive skin."

Moisturize

Peels make your skin look dry and flaky at first. To help your skin heal properly, you need to moisturize it frequently.

Also, the natural skin protective barrier is damaged during the peeling process. As a result, your skin becomes more susceptible to damage from irritants and other environmental factors.

Make sure to moisturize your skin adequately, but use the right products. For example, your skin specialist may provide you with a moisturizer for peeling skin.

Hydrate

Chemical peeling can cause your skin to become dehydrated. When this happens, your skin may feel tight, dry, and itchy.

Moisturizing alone won't be enough to rehydrate your skin. So, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This step will help your skin cells stay hydrated and plump.

Keep Your Hair Away From Your Face

Your hair is full of natural oils that can irritate your skin. So, keep it away from your face as much as possible. If you have long hair, tie it up in a ponytail or braid.

Additionally, keep your hands off your face. Touching your face can spread bacteria and dirt that can cause an infection. If you must touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water first.

The tips above will help you get the best possible results from your chemical peel. But, most importantly, look for a reliable and experienced cosmetic surgeon to perform the procedure.
