There are unfortunately many stereotypes in plastic surgery, particularly surrounding the demographics for specific procedures. Breast augmentation is certainly no exception to this, and most people think that the majority of women who seek breast enhancement are young women in their teens and twenties. However, plastic surgery is a growing industry, and more women of all ages are choosing to invest in their self-esteem by rejuvenating and enhancing the bust area. However, there are some special considerations middle aged women must be aware of before moving forward.
Advantages of Breast Augmentation for Older Women
Contrary to what many may think, breast augmentation can be a great idea for middle-aged women. There are a number of advantages that women in this age group have over younger women seeking breast augmentation.
First, an older woman is likely to be done having children, which can take a major toll on the beauty of the breasts. By waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete, more permanent rejuvenation can take place. Additionally, this negates the concern that many women have about their potential ability to breastfeed after augmentation.
Breast implants do not last forever, and by waiting a decade or two longer to undergo breast augmentation, older women have to worry less about replacements over time.
Finally, an older woman is more familiar with herself and her body, is more able to have realistic goals and be fully confident in the decision to undergo breast augmentation. Most women are also more financially stable and able to take on the burden of elective surgery.
Drawbacks of Breast Augmentation in Older Women
Naturally, in addition to the benefits of breast augmentation later in life, there are some drawbacks as well. Older women may take longer to heal from breast augmentation, as resilience and the ability to bounce back fade over the years. The results of the augmentation may also not have as much lift as in a younger woman due to differences in skin and muscle quality.
Combining a Breast Lift with Augmentation
For most women over 35 or so, a breast augmentation alone will not yield the desired results. Most middle-aged women who would like to increase bust size will also need a breast lift along with augmentation in order to provide the lift and volume necessary for good results. The combination procedure is very common, and has helped many women regain their confidence and self-esteem, particularly mothers. These procedures are often part of a plastic surgery trend known as the “mommy makeover”, and for some women, the experience can be life-changing.
The Surgery and Recovery
Breast implants can be made from soft silicone, stable silicone, or saline currently. The size and material used will have to do with the patient’s body type, age, and personal preferences and goals. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference. Depending on the patient, there are three different incisions that can be used: underneath the breast, through the areola, or through the armpit, through which the implants will be placed, typically over the muscle. For the rejuvenation portion of the procedure, the breast tissue will be adjusted, skin will be contoured and pulled tight, and internal sutures will be used to provide permanent support.
Once the incisions are closed, recovery officially begins. Patients must take it easy for a few weeks and follow all doctor instructions regarding activity restrictions and care. Patients can return to non-strenuous jobs in about two weeks or so, with vigorous exercise often restricted for several weeks after this.
Finding a Surgeon
While many plastic surgeons offer breast augmentation, it is important to find a skilled surgeon with the experience and flexibility to customize the procedure and help you achieve a beautiful, youthful bust line. Breast augmentation and breast lift are major surgical procedures, and it is essential to find a plastic surgeon you trust completely to put your safety and results above all else.
