Cosmetic breast procedures can impact your appearance as well as your self-esteem, making you feel more confident in the way you look. While breast augmentation is perhaps the best known cosmetic breast surgery, there are other procedures designed to alter or enhance the look of the breasts, including breast reductions and breast lifts.
Often times, procedures can be combined to achieve the best results. For instance, a breast augmentation or breast reduction may be combined with a breast lift. Dr. Masri and his staff will work with you to determine what procedure or combination of procedures will help you achieve your appearance goals.
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries today. The surgery can change the size and shape of the breasts. A consultation with Dr. Masri will assist in determining what is right for your body and what an achievable outcome is. An important decision that needs to be made prior to the procedure is the size of the implant that will be utilized. Many women want a size that will still appear natural to the size and shape of their body while enhancing their appearance. Sizers are available that can be tried on so that the size of the implant can be visualized on the body.
After a determination of the size of the implant is made, the material of the implant will then need to be selected. The material can be made from silicone gel or saline. Silicone implants are already filled with a gel material and will feel natural. Saline implants are empty and are filled during the augmentation procedure. They can also feel natural but may not be ideal for women who already have a limited amount of breast tissue. Silicone and saline implants are both safe for the body.
The Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation procedures require the patient to be sedated. The incision that is made is dependent on many factors and can be different for each individual. Many times the incision is made in the crease under the breast which allows scars to be hidden. This will also allow a limited amount of damage to occur to the milk ducts. A second incision option is under the nipple. If saline implants are being used, an incision can be placed in the underarm area which will allow little risk for damaging other tissue. The implants will be placed either under or over the muscle. The placement can influence the recovery process. The breast augmentation procedure will take two hours to perform if it is not combined with other cosmetic procedures.
Breast reduction is technically known as reduction mammoplasty. This procedure can reduce the size of large, heavy or pendulous breasts, making them smaller and more proportionate to the body. Dr. Masri and his staff can assist with helping you determine what size breasts would be a good fit for your body. There are several different incision patterns available depending on the the individual patient’s needs.
The first technique allows two incisions to be made around the areola in concentric circles. An additional option is for an incision to be made around the areola and continuing down vertically to the breast to the crease. A final option includes the incision made around the areola and vertically down the breast, along with a horizontal incision made in the crease beneath the breast. Once the incisions are made, the nipple will be relocated and, if necessary, the areola can be made smaller. The extra tissue will be removed and the breast will be shaped. The breast reduction procedure may require liposuction to be utilized to assist with removing excess fat or fatty tissue. This procedure can take two to four hours depending on the amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed.
As aging and gravity occur, many women often experience sagging breasts. This does not have to become an issue that you feel self-conscious about because a mastopexy procedure can restore the shape of the breasts. Dr. Masri can remove excess skin and reshape the breast tissue, which will make the breasts appear more youthful and lifted. During a consultation, the breast lift procedure options will be discussed. There are many ways that this procedure can be performed and Dr. Masri can recommend what is right for you.
A traditional breast lift utilizes an anchor-shaped incision located around the areola, down the breast, and under the breast crease. This incision will allow the maximum amount of extra skin to be removed and the tissue to be adjusted, making it a great option for individuals with extensive sagging of the breasts. If the amount of sagging is moderate, the incision can be located around the areola and vertically down to the bottom of the breast. If a very small lift is needed, an incision can be made near the areola and some skin can be adjusted. Breast lift procedures are often combined with breast augmentations and reductions.
Most patients who experience breast augmentation, breast reduction, and/or breast lift procedures are able to return to work within two weeks after surgery. All procedures will require bandaging and the patient will experience swelling, bruising, and pain. Surgical support bandages or bras will need to be worn after the dressings have been removed. This is typical in breast augmentation and breast lift procedures. After all procedures have been completed, it is important that extreme physical activity be postponed for a period of time.
