The eyes are often referred to as the windows to the soul. Unfortunately, they’re also one of the first facial features to show early signs of aging. Sagging upper eyelids and droopy under eye bags can not only make you look older than you are, they can make you look tired and less alert. Fortunately, there are procedures to treat aging eyes for a more rested, alert and youthful appearance.
Many people who are bothered by aging signs in the eyes immediately turn to eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. But, for some patients, a forehead lift may be needed. Both procedures can make you look younger and more alert, but they provide different benefits for different concerns. Read on to learn more about the two procedures and which may be right for you.
Brighten the Eyes with Eyelid Surgery
The eyelid lift procedure, also known as blepharoplasty, can decrease sagging in the upper eyelids and puffy bags beneath the eyes. Depending on the patient’s needs, the surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. The surgery is performed with local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are discreetly placed, located in the crease of the upper eyelid for upper blepharoplasty, and along the lash line or inside of the eyelid for lower blepharoplasty. Working through the incisions, extra skin and/or fat will be removed and the incisions will be sutured closed.
After blepharoplasty, patients can expect swelling and bruising. Temporary blurred vision may also occur. Elevating the head and applying cold compresses can help to minimize swelling. Recovery typically takes two weeks, though strenuous activities may need to be postponed for longer. As the eyes heal, patients will see a more alert, awake and youthful appearance.
Smooth the Forehead with a Forehead Lift
The foreheadlift procedure, also referred to as a browlift, can raise drooping eyebrows and reduce furrows and frown lines. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used. For the traditional forehead lift, the incision is placed in the hairline running across the forehead. Working through the incision, the surgeon will elevate the brows and forehead and remove any excess skin. To address furrows and frown lines, the underlying muscles will be adjusted. The incision will then be sutured closed.
The procedure will produce some swelling, bruising and discomfort. Discomfort can be managed with medication. Patients can typically wear makeup after the sutures have been removed, which is usually within a few days after surgery. Patients are often able to return to work after ten to fourteen days. As the forehead heals, patients will notice a smoother, more lifted forehead and brow, which can be quite dramatic, along with fewer forehead lines and wrinkles.
In some cases, an endoscope may be used to perform the forehead lift. In this case, several small incisions will be made within the hairline rather than one long incision. The endoscopic forehead lift is less invasive and often involves a shorter recovery, though it is generally more limited and does not involve the removal of skin.
Browlift or Eyelid Surgery: Which is Right for You?
To determine if you’re sagging eyelids require eyelid surgery or a brow lift, it must first be determined where the sagging is originating from. The appearance of sagging or hooded eyelids can result from excess skin in the upper eyelids or from eyebrows that have lowered and drooped with time.
If the eyebrows are found to be positioned appropriately, then eyelid surgery will be indicated to remove excess skin of the eyelid. But, if the eyebrows are found to have lowered, the brow lift will be performed to raise the brow and improve any hooding or heaviness over the eyelids. A qualified plastic surgeon will carefully examine your forehead and eye area to determine which procedure is right for you. In some cases, you might get the best result from combining the two. In the meantime, you can get an idea for yourself by looking in the mirror and gently raising your eyebrows with your fingers. This will demonstrate for you how raising the eyebrows can improve sagging in the upper lid.
