The nose is located in the center of the face, making it a major focal point. In fact, due to its prominence the nose can greatly impact the other facial features. For this reason, rhinoplasty is commonly combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures to provide symmetry and balance to the overall appearance of the face.
Why Combine Surgeries?
A large nose can make other facial features like the chin or ears appear smaller or out of balance. If the nose is to small, on the other hand, these features may appear too prominent. Ear pinning can be completed at the same time as rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of the nose and set prominent ears back closer to the head. Chin augmentation or reduction is often combined with rhinoplasty as well. A protruding chin can be reduced with chin reduction, while chin augmentation can add prominence and definition to a small or receding chin. Sometimes rhinoplasty is combined with other procedures for the nose, such as septoplasty, to help improve both the appearance and the function of the nose.
What to Expect from Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty procedures can involve changing the tip of the nose, narrowing the bridge of the nose, removing bumps or dips, and changing the nostrils. The rhinoplasty procedure requires the patient to be placed under local anesthesia. The first step will be to determine which approach will be used. The two options include a closed endonasal procedure or an open procedure. Approaching the procedure from inside of the nose with the closed approach allows the incisions to be hidden. The cartilage and bone will be shaped or shaved to change the appearance of the nose. Since the incisions are made inside of the nose, the procedure does not allow for high visibility while shaping the nose and may not be appropriate for more complex cases.
The open approach utilizes both incisions inside of the nostrils and on the outside on the underside of the nose between the nostrils. This allows for more visibility and access during the procedure, but also more scarring. On some occasions an augmentation may be needed which involves taking skin grafts from the septum, ear, or rib cartilage. There is also an option of using silicone implants, but there is a higher risk of infection and compatibility with the body.
Recovering from Rhinoplasty
The recovery process will last a few weeks and swelling and bruising will occur. A splint is placed on the nose and in some cases packing will need to be inserted inside of the nostrils for several days. The eye area will also be affected, often with bruising around the eyes, because of the closeness of the nose to the eye sockets. The swelling will be completely gone after one year, and up until that time will be very minimal. It is important that strenuous activities are avoided soon after surgery because they can increase the swelling and bruising of the nose since blood pressure can become elevated.
Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty
Rhinoplasty procedures are completed for both functional and cosmetic purposes. The nose is located on the center of the face and can have a huge impact on facial balance and symmetry. For this reason, many people elect to have rhinoplasty to improve the nasal appearance. But, many patients also require functional rhinoplasty or septoplasty due to impaired breathing. The reconstructive surgery to correct a deviated septum is often combined with the cosmetic reshaping of the nose, which may be referred to as septorhinoplasty.
Many individuals feel self-conscious of large or protruding ears. Fortunately, there is a great solution to solve this problem that is easy and permanent. Ear pinning procedures, also known as otoplasty, do not affect the patient’s ability to hear in any way; they simply reposition the ears so that they lay closer to the head. The procedure will require an incision to be made behind the ear at the point where the skin meets the head. Cartilage and skin may be manipulated to achieve the desired look and the ears can be pinned back with sutures.
After surgery, dressings will be applied to the ears that will need to remain in place for at least three days. Pressure should not be applied to the ears and sleeping on the side is not recommended. This may disrupt sleep and sleep patterns for a period of time. The risks of the procedure are minimal, and the surgery will only leave a small and thin scar after the incisions are healed.
Patients who want to change their chin do so for many reasons. Some believe their chin is too small, while others feel that it is too prominent. A smaller chin can make the nose appear larger than it truly is. A very prominent or large chin can disrupt balance and symmetry in the face. When the chin is balanced with the nose, the face can have a harmonious and beautiful look. Chin augmentation and rhinoplasty are often performed at the same time so that this balance can easily be achieved.
Chin augmentation, also referred to as mentoplasty, can add definition and prominence to a small or receding chin. Chin reduction, on the other hand, makes the chin smaller by reducing the boned. The surgery will begin with an incision being made either inside of the mouth or under the most prominent area of the chin. The bone can be shaved or chiseled down, or an implant can be added. Implants are usually soft and have the feeling and appearance of soft tissue so that it appears natural.
The recovery time from chin augmentation or reducion will involve swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks. This will reduce over time and typically the swelling diminishes within one week. Pain can be controlled with medication and only mild discomfort is common.
