Know the difference when it comes to dermal fillersDermal fillers are all the rage these days, and it's not hard to see why. These convenient treatments offer instant results that last from several months to over a year. There are many different types of fillers on the market, some made with similar formulations, others with unique ingredients. One of the most common types of filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a compound that is found naturally in the skin. If you're interested in dermal fillers, than you've probably heard of some of the most popularhyaluronic fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm. But if these fillers are both made with hyaluronic gel, then what is the difference between them?

Similar Formulations

Hyaluronic acid, which comprises the base for both Restylane and Juvederm, adds volume and hydration to the skin, lifting and filling in wrinkles. Both products can also be used for temporary facial augmentation, such as in the lips. The gels offer natural-looking, instant anti-aging results.

Non-Animal Derived Ingredients

Unlike bovine-derived hyaluronic acid, both Restylane and Juvederm are safe for patients with allergies to bovine tissue, as the products are synthesized from bacteria instead of animal products. This is a distinct advantage over some other fillers. Some patients are also morally reluctant to use animal products, and Juvederm and Restylane offer great results from non-animal derived sources.

Process

Both products are administered through a straightforward injection process in an office setting. Topical numbing is typically used to make the process more comfortable, and the treatment usually takes 30 minutes or less. Once the injection process is completed, patients can return to normal activities right away.

Longevity

An important factor for most patients, Restylane and Juvederm do differ in how long the results last following treatment. Restylane tends to be a shorter-term treatment, lasting around 6 months, while Juvederm works for about 9-12 months on average.

Results

Dermal fillers can make exceptional improvement to deep wrinkles and lines for several months. They can also be used to fill in areas that require more volume. Patients can enjoy instant results with both fillers, and very few side effects are generally reported following the procedure. Some common mild side effects can include swelling, redness and bruising at the injection site. These generally subside within a few days, however.

So What's the Difference?

Though there are slight variations between the fillers, particularly in the longevity of each option, the results are largely the same. Some doctors prefer the smooth texture of Juvederm, while others may feel more comfortable with Restylane, as it was the first FDA approved filler and has been used and studied since 2003 (Juvederm was approved in 2006).Restylane also has a slightly firmer texture. Both fillers are high-quality products, and the choice is up to you and your doctor!

Talk to Your Plastic Surgeon

It takes a lot of skill to be able to properly inject dermal fillers with consistently good results, and you should only seek help from a board certified plastic surgeon, rather than choosing the cheapest service you can find in hopes of a bargain. Spending money on a substandard result, however, does not make for a bargain. Fillers are only temporary, but you don't want to risk a poor outcome that could last for up to a year.

Another reason to choose a plastic surgeon for your procedure is the expert advice you'll get. If you're not sure which dermal filler is right for you, your plastic surgeon can give you a customized recommendation to maximize your chances for a good result.
