Broken capillaries can be an annoyance to us, especially when they are located in the facial area. When they’re really bad, they can negatively influence our self esteem. Fortunately, there are many ways to remove these broken capillaries, including Intense Pulsed Light treatment, Erbium YAG laser treatment, and Photo Dynamic Therapy.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Intense Pulsed Light treatments are completed utilizing a machine that creates strong pulses of light that are directed at the skin. The melanin in the pigmented areas of the skin absorb the light, dissolving the pigmented cells and shrinking the blood vessels. This is a safe, non-invasive treatment that provides excellent long-term results with little to no downtime. This treatment works well with dermal fillers which can assist in smoothing any skin depressions that still exist after the treatment process has occurred. Dermal fillers that are often recommended with IPL include Restylane and Collagen.
Erbium YAG Laser
The Erbium YAG laser can help smooth your face and make it appear youthful, while also reducing the appearance of broken capillaries. It is safe for use on the facial area. The laser produces a beam of high energy light through a handheld device. The light gently removes the damaged areas of skin, resurfacing the skin one layer at a time for a smoother complexion free of blemishes and broken capillaries. The Erbium YAG laser can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes known as crows’ feet, lines around the nose and mouth, and creases and lines on the forehead or in between the eyes.
Prior to treatment, instructions will be given to prepare the skin for the treatment. The laser resurfacing will be done in a clinical setting and a light sedation or anesthesia will be administered. The length of the treatment is dependent on what is attempting to be corrected as well as the number of locations. The treatment is simple, but the healing process may take time. The facial area may need to be protected with an ointment and the skin may be uncomfortable and appear red as it heals. The skin discoloration can last for many weeks, but can be covered with makeup after two weeks. Sunscreen must be worn as the skin heals. This treatment can have long-lasting results and can remove the broken capillaries under the skin as well as many other blemishes you may have. This treatment can also be used in conjunction with Intense Pulsed Light treatments to remove broken capillaries. This combination will be determined by Dr. Masri after your initial consultation.
Photodynamic therapy is a newer treatment that is being performed with great results. This therapy utilizes aminolevulinic acid to treat damaged skin. Once this acid is applied to the skin, a wavelength of light that is either an LED blue light or an Intense Pulsed Light is placed over the area. This allows an inflammatory reaction to occur where the surface becomes red. The skin may experience a mild burning sensation, and swelling can occur. The redness will subside within one week and sunlight needs to be avoided for at least two days after the treatment. This reaction will restore the skin, making it smoother and healthier looking. The sunspots and uneven skin will decrease as new collagen is naturally formed and the skin thickens again. This treatment has been successful in treating sun damaged skin, precancerous conditions, and hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage. It can also reduce broken capillaries and create an even skin surface. The treatment may need to occur more than once depending on the condition of the skin. It is recommended that the treatments are spaced at least three weeks apart from each other.
Although broken capillaries can be unsightly, they can be treated! You can feel confident in your appearance after you receive treatment with Intense Pulsed Light, Erbium YAG laser, or Photodynamic Therapy. These skin resurfacing treatments will produce more natural collagen in the skin and leave your entire face looking youthful and rejuvenated. Dermal fillers are another great avenue to explore depending on the severity of the areas that need to be corrected.
