Liposuction technology has advanced to the point that it has become a highly effective and versatile procedure that can be used to treat a variety of areas. Liposuction also has uses in procedures like fat grafting. One of the variants now available, thanks to new gentle techniques, is facial liposuction. Fat cells are present all over the body, and people carry fat in various areas. Because of this, facial liposuction can be a great option for some patients with specific concerns.
Why Facial Liposuction?
As with other types of liposuction, facial liposuction is used to remove localized pockets of fat in the face and/or neck to improve contour and reduce overall volume. Often, certain areas of fat will not respond to traditional methods of weight loss (diet and exercise), resulting in “problem areas” of stubborn fat pockets. While many people experience these problem areas in the stomach, hips, and thighs, others may find that stubborn fat stays in the face and neck region, which can cover the natural contours of the face. Facial liposuction can be used for the following problems:
- Fat underneath the chin (“double” chin)
- Bands of fat in the neck
- Undefined cheek contour
- “Baby” face
- Facial fat leftover following massive weight loss
If you are unhappy with your facial appearance, and think that fat removal might be a good option for you, then it’s a good idea to meet with a plastic surgeon.
How Does it Work?
In the past, facial liposuction was not possible because of the earlier methods of liposuction, which were far more traumatic than modern techniques. Today, instead of using large incisions to access the fat, a gentle technique such as SmartLipo laser liposuction is utilized, thus allowing surgeons to treat small, sensitive areas. Laser liposuction is performed through tiny incisions, and the laser gently melts the fat before it is suctioned out through a tiny tube known as a cannula. The heat of the laser aids in skin retraction following the procedure, which greatly enhances the outcome and makes this method ideal for facial liposuction. SmartLipo is performed under local anesthesia, though sedation is available should the patient feel more comfortable with a combination.
Recovery from SmartLipo is fairly minimal, with simple dressings and a day or two of rest being the only truly necessary components before resuming normal activities. Fat removal with laser liposuction is permanent, though it is possible to gain weight later on, as fat cells are still capable of expanding.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Unlike many plastic surgeries, facial liposuction is often best for younger patients, as good skin elasticity is important for getting good results from the procedure. However, anyone in general good health with fat deposits in the face and neck area may be a candidate, depending on the circumstances. Only a plastic surgeon, however, can decide whether a patient is healthy enough for the procedure and will likely benefit from the results. Sometimes, it is best for facial liposuction to be combined with other procedures to produce the best results. This is especially true for older facial liposuction patients.
Sometimes, facial liposuction may not be a good option for you, despite being in good physical health. Only a qualified facial plastic surgeon can advise you on which option will work best for you.
