Rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty are a focus of Masri Clinic for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in Birmingham and Dearborn, MI. We perform both cosmetic rhinoplasty and reconstructive nasal airway surgery, sometimes combining these techniques to improve both the appearance of the nose and the patient’s ability to breathe.
The nose is our most prominent facial feature, making it one of the first things we notice about one another. Unfortunately, many people are dissatisfied with the appearance of their noses or suffer from poor quality of life due to breathing problems from an issue within the nasal structures. Rhinoplasty, often known as a “nose job,” is a popular cosmetic surgery that can improve the shape and/or function of the nose, creating improved facial harmony and balance and boosting overall facial aesthetics.

Cosmetic nose surgery is commonly known as a “nose job.” It is a complex and challenging plastic surgery procedure as it involves modifying the size and shape of the nose to suit the patient’s face while maintaining or improving their ability to breathe.
A person’s nose must be customized to fit their other facial features, their goals, and their personality. The surgeons at Masri Clinic for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery consider all of these factors when they perform rhinoplasty in Birmingham, MI. Nasal anatomy and the healing process for each individual patient are different and can affect the final rhinoplasty results, but a skilled plastic surgeon will have years of experience in creating consistently excellent results for patients of all backgrounds.
A rhinoplasty in Birmingham or Dearborn can offer patients a number of cosmetic or functional benefits. Patients usually choose rhinoplasty because they are unhappy with the way their nose looks or they want to boost their quality of life by addressing a breathing problem.
A cosmetic rhinoplasty improves facial harmony and balance between the facial features by making changes that may include raising or refining the nasal tip, removing dips or bumps in the bridge of the nose, narrowing the nasal bridge, and/or modifying the size or position of nostrils that are excessively wide or upturned. Most patients who undergo a cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure find that they feel more confident and social in their everyday lives because they feel better about the way they look.
Patients with breathing problems caused by a blocked nasal passage or abnormalities within the structures of the nose (such as a deviated septum) may find relief through a functional rhinoplasty procedure.
Men and women who are in good general health and hope to improve the size or shape of their nose are ideal candidates for rhinoplasty in Birmingham. Those with breathing challenges or certain birth defects may benefit from rhinoplasty as well.
In most cases, patients see Dr. Masri for a rhinoplasty because they are bothered by a nose that’s too large, too wide, too small, broken and poorly healed, crooked, or bent. They may also be displeased by the size of their nostrils or a hump on the bridge of the nose.
Rhinoplasty patients should be at least 15 years of age to allow their noses to finish maturing. Waiting until at least the age of 18 is preferable, to ensure that any further development does not compromise the results. In addition, patients should be non-smokers or those who are willing to quit as smoking can complicate the healing process. Finally, rhinoplasty patients should have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure.
During a rhinoplasty consultation in Birmingham or Dearborn, Dr. Masri will evaluate the patient’s nose and face and assess their facial balance. If the patient is experiencing breathing problems, the internal nasal structures will be examined as well. Dr. Masri will ask the patient about their goals for surgery and discuss realistic changes that could help create the right nose for the patient’s face. Computer imaging helps the patient to visualize potential modifications.
The consultation will also give Dr. Masri a chance to go over the patient’s health history and ensure that they are a good candidate for the procedure. This is an excellent opportunity for patients to ask any questions they may have and get all the information they need to make a decision about whether or not to move forward with rhinoplasty.
For best results, the Masri Clinic suggests a cessation of tobacco use several weeks before and after the rhinoplasty in order to minimize the risk of complications. Prior to surgery, patients should stop using certain supplements and medications such as blood thinners as directed by the staff at the clinic. This is usually recommended about two weeks before the procedure.
As it is important for patients to rest after the procedure, it is a good idea to fill any prescriptions and prepare the patient’s home for recovery before the day of the surgery. Finally, patients will need to be driven to and from their surgical appointment at Masri Clinic for safety reasons.

Typically, rhinoplasty is performed under local anesthetic rather than general anesthesia and incisions are often placed inside the nose to hide them. A closed, or endonasal procedure, places all incisions within the nostrils to avoid visible scarring. Bone and cartilage are then shaved and shaped to achieve the desired look. The closed approach offers limited visibility and narrow surgical openings.
The open rhinoplasty approach also uses incisions inside the nostrils, along with another small incision at the base of the nose which allows for improved access and greater accuracy. However, the open approach may potentially leave a 4-5 millimeter scar at the base of the nose after the patient’s ‘nose job’. This approach is used for correcting significant defects and trauma to the nose while continuing to provide the opportunity for aesthetic work.
Options for augmenting the patient’s nose include adding cartilage. Autologous cartilage grafts taken from the nasal septum integrate best but grafts from ear or rib cartilage may also be used.
Silicone as an option includes a higher risk of reacting poorly with existing tissues or of infection. Fillers or fat grafts are also an option to add volume in some areas, but not all of these solutions are permanent. Dr. Masri discusses the surgical plan in detail with patients before performing rhinoplasty in Dearborn or Birmingham.
A nasal splint will shield the patient’s nose from accidental bumps for the first week of healing. Surgical packing inside their nose will remain for several days to support the tissue while it heals in the new position.
Much of the swelling and bruising around the eyes will subside in three or four days during the rhinoplasty recovery. Any residual swelling will gradually disappear in the months following surgery. The nose will retain a small amount of swelling for up to a year. This swelling is minor and generally not noticeable.
The final result of a rhinoplasty is not fully apparent until about a year after surgery.
After a rhinoplasty, patients should be careful to avoid strenuous exercise for three to six weeks because elevated blood pressure associated with exercise will increase their swelling and bruising. They should be able to resume normal social activities within three weeks. Most patients return to work in 10-14 days.
As with all surgical cosmetic procedures, rhinoplasty in Dearborn or Birmingham can involve some risks and side effects. Patients who are in good health typically heal well after surgery. However, some patients may experience one or more of the following complications:
|Infection||Unsatisfactory Nasal Appearance|
Fortunately, these risks are minimized when an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Masri performs nose surgery.

With most patients, rhinoplasty scars are located inside of the nostrils and are not visible. The open rhinoplasty approach creates the possibility of a small scar at the base of their nose. This scar normally heals well and is located in an unobtrusive spot; consequently, the small scar is almost unnoticeable. Rhinoplasty before and after images will demonstrate what prospective patients can expect in terms of scarring after their nose job procedure.
A revision rhinoplasty surgery will almost always improve a patient’s poor results. The tissues must settle before undergoing a rhinoplasty revision, however. Operating before the swelling settles makes it harder to evaluate the condition of the nose and to accurately improve the rhinoplasty results.
Additionally, the risk of bleeding, scarring, and other complications will be increased. Normally, it is suggested that patients wait twelve months before their rhinoplasty revision depending on how well they’re healing.
It’s more challenging to work with thinner skin. Thin skin does not hide small imperfections as well as thick skin. However, good results can still be achieved with a meticulous hand and patience.
Nasal growth is typically complete by age 15 or 16. Late adolescence and early adulthood are considered good ages for optimal rhinoplasty results. Surgery is also possible for younger patients with structural defects or trauma to the nose and for older patients willing to accept a potentially longer recovery time.
Grafts are often used in the nasal tip where the existing cartilage must typically be reinforced in order to avoid drooping and ensure an elegant result. Grafts are not necessary when the goal is simply to narrow the bridge of the nose or reduce bumps.
The cost of rhinoplasty varies from patient to patient and depends on the complexity of the procedure. It can be discussed at the consultation.
