Fat is a fact of life, but that doesn't mean you have to be stuck carrying around too much of it. In some cases, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly is enough to keep unwanted fat away. In other scenarios, fat can be particularly stubborn and hang around, no matter how healthy your diet is or how many miles you run.

Fortunately, there are fat removal treatment options out there that can help to get rid of unwanted fat from various areas of the body. From your face to your tummy and from your chin to your thighs, here are a few of your options for saying "bye" to excess fat.

Kybella - Double Chin Treatment

The fatty deposits that form under the chin or submental area can be pretty frustrating. Although a double chin sometimes devel0ps a result of being overweight or obese, it's also possible for people who are not carrying extra pounds to develop one. It can seem that no amount of exercise or dietary improvements can help to eliminate an unwanted double chin.

Fortunately, there is a treatment available specifically for people who have unwanted submental fullness. When exercise and diet don't take care of unwanted chin fat, Kybella can. Kybella is an injectable treatment made from deoxycholic acid.

The human body naturally produces deoxycholic acid, which works to dissolve and absorb fat. When injected directly into the area beneath the chin, the acid helps to break down the fat. Then, the body flushes out the fat through natural processes. Usually, treatment with Kybella involves a series of injections spaced about four weeks apart. Each injection session typically takes about 20 minutes or less.

Although some people need as many as six treatment sessions to get the results they are after, others need fewer. Once the fat is dissolved by Kybella, it's gone for good.

Facial Liposuction

Although many people choose procedures such as fat transfer to reverse age-related facial volume loss, others have the opposite problem. Those who have unwanted fullness in their cheeks, chin, and neck can opt for facial liposuction to get rid of unwanted fatty deposits. Depending on your wants and the degree of skin laxity you have, you might combine a facial liposuction procedure with a facelift or neck lift to rejuvenate and refresh your appearance.

TruSculpt 3D

It might seem that no matter how much you exercise or diet, some fat just won't budge. The fat in your abdominal area, around your thighs, or on your back can be especially stubborn. The good news? Getting rid of that unwanted fat doesn't have to involve surgery.

TruSculpt 3D helps to eliminate unwanted fat by heating the fat cells in the target area to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees C). Typically, the treatment destroys about 60 percent of fat cells in the target area during a single treatment. The cells are then flushed out of the body by the lymphatic system. Since the fat cells aren't physically removed from the body (as they are during liposuction), it can take about a month before results are visible.

Since TruSculpt 3D isn't surgery, recovery time after treatment is very minimal. Many people are able to get back to their normal activities right away, including work and exercise. Some redness is the treatment area is common right after the procedure, but it usually fades quickly.

Although non-surgical fat removal can be the ideal option for some patients, people looking to remove larger quantities of fat or people looking to remove fat from multiple areas of the body might find that surgical liposuction is the better option for them. During liposuction, the fat is surgically accessed and gently suctioned away from the treatment area. People are usually given a local anesthetic and IV sedation or go under general anesthesia during the procedure.

Since liposuction is surgery, some recovery time is involved. Many people need to take at least one week, if not two, off from work. It's also usually recommended that you wear a compression garment around the treated area after liposuction to help improve the final shape and your final results.

Fat -- everyone's got it and some people have more than others. The tricky thing about fat is that it can be incredibly stubborn. You might be otherwise healthy and in good shape. You might even be at a healthy body weight. But you might also have deposits of fat in certain areas of your body, like your thighs, tummy or hips. The good news about stubborn fat? You don't have to put up with it. Several effective fat reduction options are available, ranging from non-surgical treatments to surgery. Learn more about your options and choose the one that one that's best for you.

For Cellulite: Velasmooth

Cellulite is its own unique problem. It's fat, but it's fat that can appear on anyone, from very lean people to the obese. Unlike other types of fat, cellulite is particularly tricky to treat. You might have seen creams and scrubs on the market that promised to melt away those dimples beneath your skin. But the truth is, very few things will actually get rid of it.

One method that can treat cellulite is a treatment called Velasmooth. Velasmooth uses a combination of lasers and massage rollers to shrink the fatty deposits responsible for cellulite, creating a smoother appearance beneath the skin. Along with helping to reduce cellulite, the treatment can also help to improve your circulation. Since massage is part of Velasmooth, some people also notice that any aches and pains they usually have go away. Usually, a series of Velasmooth treatments spaced a few weeks apart is recommended for the best results.

Heat Fat Up: TruSculpt3D

Fat is a funny thing. It can be so stubborn, and yet, it's also very easy to destroy. Case in point: TruSculpt3D destroys fat cells by heating them up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius). The body will then flush the destroyed cells out through the lymphatic system.

TruSculpt3D can be performed on several different areas of the body, including under the chin, on the arms, and in places where stubborn fat usually hangs out. You can have the treatment in multiple areas of the body, depending on your body type and fat reduction needs.

While there is almost no recovery or downtime needed after TruSculpt3D, it can take up to a month for final results to appear. Your body needs time to flush away the damaged fat cells. While many patients are happy with their results after a single treatment, you can schedule an additional treatment to improve your results.

To Melt Away Fat: SmartLipo

TruSculpt3D isn't your only non-surgical fat reduction option. SmartLipo is another great fat removal treatment. While TruSculpt3D uses heat to get rid of fat, Smart Lipo uses laser energy.

During a SmartLipo treatment, a laser beam liquifies the fat beneath the skin.  The liquid fat is then removed from the body through a very small incision. The entire treatment is minimally invasive and only requires local anesthesia. Along with getting rid of unwanted fat, SmartLipo can also help to tighten skin, so that you're less likely to have any sagging or drooping after the procedure.

SmartLipo requires a bit more recovery time than TruSculpt3D. You might need to take a couple of days off from work to rest up after the treatment.

Fat Reduction Surgery: Liposuction

Liposuction is the grandparent of all fat reduction treatments. It's been around the longest, and for some people, it's still the best option. While other methods use heat and lasers to get rid of fat, liposuction involves the use of cannulas, or fine tubes, to physically remove the fat from the body. Before the surgery, the fat is usually injected with a special solution that makes it easier to remove. Depending on where on the body a person is having liposuction, the surgeon might also use ultrasound to guide the procedure.

Since it is a surgery, liposuction has more restrictions than other non-surgical fat removal options. It's not recommended for smokers, for example. People with certain medical conditions might also not be good candidates for the surgery.

Another thing to consider when deciding between liposuction and other fat removal options is the downtime. Usually, people need at least a week to recover after liposuction. Full recovery can take a few weeks or even a few months. The benefit is that more fat can usually be removed from the body during the surgery compared to other options.

Weight Stability and LiposuctionWhile many people think of liposuction as a shortcut to weight loss, the procedure is actually nothing of the time. In fact, people who are overweight are typically not good candidates for the procedure. With that said, you might be wondering who in the world would be a good candidate for a surgery that removes excess fat from the body. The answer is: people who are at or near their goal weight but have stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. This phenomenon is more common than you might think, especially for people who have reached middle age. So why is weight stability so important for liposuction patients?

How Liposuction Works

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes fat cells. There have been many changes to the process over the years, but the goals and basic principles are still the same. The surgery is much more about body contouring than weight loss. “Problem areas,” of stubborn fat, often the hips, thighs, and stomach are treated by making small incisions through which fat is suctioned out and the area is contoured. Nearly any area of the body can be treated with some type of liposuction.

How Much Fat?

Because liposuction is much more about sculpting the body than about weight loss, many people are surprised by how much fat is actually removed. Patients should remember, however, that it’s much more about the overall results than the amount of fat that is taken out during the procedure.

Types of Liposuction

Liposuction technology has come a long way in the last few decades, and modern liposuction is much safer and more effective than ever before. Today, there are two major types of liposuction that are regularly performed:

Tumescent Liposuction

The more traditional liposuction technique, this surgery uses injections of tumescent fluid to help protect the tissue throughout the procedure, reducing pain and bleeding. Sometimes, ultrasonic energy is used to break up the fat cells so they can be removed safely.

SmartLipo Laser Liposuction

One of the newest types of liposuction, SmartLipo is quickly gaining popularity for its gentle, effective, and versatile qualities. Tiny incisions are made in the area to be treated, and a small tube containing a laser fiber is used to gently melt unwanted fat so it can be suctioned out through the incisions. The heat from the laser also helps to tighten the skin. SmartLipo requires only a few days of downtime, and can be used on many areas of the body, including sensitive areas, such as the face.

Remember—Weight Gain is Still Possible

Fat cells never grow back, which does make liposuction a permanent procedure. However, maintenance is necessary to retain the great results from surgery. Patients must pledge to maintain a healthy diet and a regular exercise plan to avoid weight gain that could ruin the results of the surgery. Weight gain occurs when fat cells expand, so while the removal of some fat cells may prevent gain in the treated areas, any remaining fat cells can still expand.

Using the Surgery as Motivation—Before AND After

For many people, liposuction can be used as motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle before and after the procedure. Before the procedure, it can be used as motivation to establish good habits and improve candidacy for the procedure, while after surgery, liposuction can serve as motivation very differently—to help preserve the results of the procedure.
