Getting Back to "Normal" After Plastic Surgery: What You Can Expect

Whether you're thinking of a facial plastic surgery, such as a facelift, or a body procedure, such as a breast augmentation, you're probably aware that you'll need some time to rest and recover after the surgery. How long it will take you to get back to "normal" after plastic surgery depends on a few factors, including the type of procedure you have and how you take care of yourself.

While results can be different for different people, here's what you can generally expect after plastic surgery.

after plastic surgery what to expectWhat You'll Feel Like

It's common to expect some discomfort after a surgical procedure. You'll have incisions that are healing and you can generally expect to feel slightly sore. You may feel slightly fatigued or tired after your surgery, especially if you were under general anesthesia.

The good news is that any discomfort you feel right after your surgery can usually be managed with pain medications and some rest. Your surgeon will most likely prescribe medications to you or recommend over-the-counter medicines to try. If you find that the pain relievers you're taking aren't doing much to help you out, you can ask your surgeon for a different prescription or a different recommendation.

One other common side effect of plastic surgery that patients don't anticipate is constipation. Several factors connected with surgery come together to create the perfect storm. Those factors include anesthesia, taking pain medications and changes to your activity levels and dietary habits. If you experience constipation, you can try to move things along by taking a laxative or by adding prune juice to your diet.

Resting up at home after your plastic surgery is important for a speedy recovery. While some rest will help you feel better, too much rest can have the opposite effect. Take it easy, but do try to get up and walk around, at least a little bit, during the first few days after your procedure.

What You'll Look Like

Final results after any type of plastic surgery, whether breast augmentation or rhinoplasty, usually take some time to appear. You won't look picture-perfect or even picture-ready for some time after your procedure.

Initially, you can expect to see some swelling and bruising in the area of the surgery. Keeping the area elevated and use ice packs as directed to bring the swelling down and reduce bruising. Depending on the size of the incisions, you might have some very visible, very angry looking marks after your procedure.

It's fairly common for patients to question their decision to have surgery during the first few weeks of recovery. Depending on the surgery you had, your nose might be swollen, your face puffy or your breasts might look "fake." You might wonder what you've done to yourself or if you made a mistake.

Fortunately, as the swelling goes down and your body continues to heal, the results will begin to emerge. At that point in time, you'll be more likely to remember why you decided to have the surgery in the first place.

What You'll Be Doing

Some time off from work or other daily activities is a given after surgery. The amount of time you'll need off depends on the surgery you have and the type of work you do. If you have a job that involves lots of physical activity, you'll need more time off than someone who works at a desk. Some surgeries, such as abdominoplasty, typically require more time off than surgeries such as an eyelid lift.

Even once you're able to resume light activities, you might still want to hold off on physically challenging activities. That doesn't have to mean you'll be stuck sitting around all day, though. Some light movement, such as taking a walk, is usually a good idea, even just a day or two after your surgery. If you're wondering when you'll be able to pick up certain hobbies or activities again, your surgeon can provide you with a clearer idea based on your procedure and how your recovery is moving along.
