3 Ways to Reduce Bothersome Under-Chin Fat

May 06, 2022

If you have unwanted fat under your chin, resulting in what many call a "double chin," you're not alone. This is a common complaint among both men and women. While it can occur at any age, it does tend to become more pronounced as you grow older.

If you're fed up with your appearance and are dreaming of a having toned neck, you have options. Here are three common ways to say goodbye to your extra chin.

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure by which excess fat is removed from beneath the skin. To perform liposuction, your surgeon will make a series of small incisions in the treatment area. They'll then insert a special device called a cannula into these incisions. Through the cannula, your surgeon sucks out the extra fat cells.

If you also have extra skin beneath your chin, your surgeon may follow up liposuction with a neck lift — a surgery that removes excess skin and tightens up the neck. However, if you are younger and your skin is still pretty elastic, this may not be necessary. Your skin will likely tighten up on its own after liposuction.

Liposuction is an invasive surgical procedure, which means it comes with some risks. However, it can often be performed under local anesthesia, and the results are permanent as long as you maintain your weight post-surgery.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a newer type of liposuction that is less invasive than traditional liposuction. Instead of making multiple incisions, with SmartLipo, your doctor only needs to make one. They then insert a special type of laser into that incision. The laser heats your fat cells to a specific temperature, causing them to liquefy. The liquid fat is then suctioned out of the treatment area.

Patients tend to have less swelling in recovery with SmartLipo than with traditional liposuction, which means your results will be visible sooner. Most patients return to work within a few days. However, the procedure does tend to cost more than traditional liposuction. SmartLipo is not recommended for patients who are obese or who are not confident they can maintain their weight post-treatment.

TruSculpt 3D

TruSculpt 3D is a new and innovative procedure for reducing fat and tightening the skin. It can be performed on many different areas of the body, including the submental area, or under the chin.

Since TruSculpt 3D is a non-invasive procedure, it is often recommended for patients who cannot undergo liposuction or SmartLipo for health-related reasons. Patients do not need any sort of sedation or anesthesia before TruSclupt 3D.

This treatment works by using radio frequencies to heat fat cells. Once the cells reach 45 degrees Celcius, they are destroyed. All you will feel during the treatment is a gentle warming sensation; there is no pain.

You won't see results instantly. Instead, in the weeks following treatment, your results will slowly develop as your body flushes out the dead fat cells.

Your full results will be visible about three to four months post-treatment. If you don't get the results you want from one TruSculpt 3D session, you can have additional treatments, spaced one month apart. Patients can return to work or other activities immediately after treatment.

If your double chin is bothering you, there is no reason to continue living with a lack of confidence in your appearance. Have a cosmetic doctor look at your chin and recommend a treatment approach. They can further discuss the pros and cons of each of the treatments listed above.
